Course Description and Objectives:

The conventional reciprocating engine design used in an aircraft is a piston-type engine. It produces mechanical work through the combustion of a fuel-air mixture inside the cylinder. This type of engine design imposes a significant limitation on the maximum altitude and speed of the aircraft.

This course is designed to prepare the students to know the different types of piston engines used in an aircraft. The student will identify and explain the different designs and components in a piston-type engine. Most importantly, the students will be able to apply deductive reasoning by understanding each design’s principle of operation.

At the end of this training course, the participant will successfully be able to:

  • Identify and explain the different types of piston-type engines.
  • Identify and explain the different designs and components in a piston-type engine.
  • Explain the principle of operation of each type of piston-type engine.
  • Prepare the student to take the CAAP Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) License.
